      Tipperary forestry rally 23 review

      Ian McCarthy, May 19, 2023September 26, 2023

Well after 2 failed attempts to get some gravel rallying done we finally headed for Cahir on 15th may. The initial impression of the stages were that they were rough but in fairness, they ended up being challenging but reasonable. In fact the changing surface and odd bump made for some fantastic excitement in the car. It was however a rally where experience was key and that became clear as many or our j1000 competitors, along with plenty more experienced crews came unstuck.

Patrick (nav) and I started off on older tyres thinking we would finish them off while we got used to each other at a somewhat reasonable pace. This was to be a mistake. We gave away lumps of time to the leaders in 11f on stage one before waking up on stage two. Taking caution in the scrapyard that was the last few kms of stage 3 cost time also but we had been laughing hysterically on and off the stages all day so we didn’t mind. Having put a newer pair of kumho on the front for the second loop we got down to business and the car was transformed. “bitsy” the civic was right at home on the fast narrow slippy stage 4, until just before the halfway mark. It was here we caught another car and he held us all the way to the finish board. We lost over 30s at that point and with it, any realistic chance of putting the second place crew under any meaningful amount of pressure.

Having gathered ourselves we spoke of the fact we were third at this point. Mike Feeney in second was 34sec up the road and we knew we wouldn’t overhaul him without him having problems so we set about tidying up our driving and trying to go fast but clean. It seemed to work as we put in 2 times which were within 2 secs of the 2 crews in Front.

Wrapping up I must say though we were delighted to be getting closer to the pace we need to have the huge take away was that all this was done among a group of good friends before during and after the event. It would be impossible without time and effort from everyone I call friend. I really learned this weekend that this sport began for fun. Some people in and out of cars forget that fact but we won’t be from here on in. Spanner time now. Moonraker won’t be long coming.

      Over and out.

      Ian.

We are home after an exciting day at Cork Forest Rally, along with most of the car….. we had the debut of the “new and exciting” colour scheme, featuring plenty of orange…. We had the usual crew there. Joe was on the spanners. Damien was moonlighting in some R5 camp,…

      Killarney Preparations

      November 26, 2024November 26, 2024

Preparations have begun for our visit to the Killarney Historic Rally this weekend. Preparations involved a “small” wiring job on a Mitsubishi L200. While some may think that Bitzy is bloody ancient, it’s not old enough for the Historical. So, we are going down for a look….. No doubt there’ll…

And we are off to Killarney!

      May 2, 2024May 2, 2024

Well, more correctly, most of the gang are off to Killarney. We are going to get in the way and watch rally cars stretch their legs on tarmac. As it’s tarmac, it’s not our favourite service (not muddy and slippy enough, not enough gravel). In other scandal , Bitsy is…

Well the Cork Motor Club forestry rally sprint was a massive success for all 3 of our competing crews on Tuesday. All arrived home with no damage and after a fantastically close battle together. Well done to Damien O Donovan and Vincent Goggin in their 1600 R2 fiesta, on taking possession of the stunning and brand new redmist motorsport trophy, which will hereafter go with the fastest redmist crew on any event more than one of us compete. They were followed only a few seconds back by 2 Subaru gc8s. One was the father and son team of Jason coulter and Ryan Coulter. Jason not having competed in 4 years and Ryan never having competed. Joe shinnors jnr and Patrick O Sullivan next in a constantly self developed Subaru were next after a day of on the limit effort.the rest of us checked things which we knew didn't need checking and all of us ate the sandwiches and tea wherever they were available. Anna Hartnet, Lorraine Coulter and Fiona o brien kept everyone going in spite of mentioning they were cold now and then. Darragh Murphy for his help all day.Well done all. ... See MoreSee Less

Merry Christmas to all of our friends in the world of motorsport. We are back out at Cork Motor Club Boggeragh Rally sprint. Damien is out in Car 43. Come along on the 29th of December to watch us try to work off the turkey....Sneaky edit after someone pointed out I'm an idiot for forgetting Jason Coulter is competing also guided by Ryan. It's Ryan's baptism of fire in the passenger seat. Sorry Mr Coulter... ... See MoreSee Less
