      Circuit of Kerry 2023

      Damien O'Donovan, April 11, 2023September 26, 2023

A return to navigating ( taking any chance we can to be in a rally car)

Im not sure why, But Colin Neligan let me back in the car for a second time. I was tasked with reading strange letter and number combinations for a full day. and luckly for Colin i was able to remember R=right and L= left. In another stroke of luck i only had to count to 6, things get a bit fuzzy after 9.

      About the Car

This car is something else. Ya we all like the R2 and R5 cars, but what truly defines rallying is a proper clubman car. This started life as a bog standard Swift GTI, but over the last number of years has developed in to a real tidy little rocket. The engine is the 13B unit found in all GTI swifts of the era, but with the addition of an extra few CCs, lumpy cams, Toyota 20v Throttle bodies and a tasty exhaust.
The power is delivered to the wheels though a Dog box and a gripper diff. While the top speed is nothing to be excited about, how fast it gets there is giggle inducing every time. 5:1 final drive will do that I guess.

The day Consisted of a 3×3 format.
SS1-4-7 Mount Eagle. Starting just outside Castleisland, had a fast flowing start, before getting tight and slippy on the assent and descent on the mountain sections of this called for major bravery but using your head was more important.

SS2-5-8 Headleys Bridge. A blistering fast stage, with a few KM of tight tricky lanes in the middle. The swift suffered on the faster places here, having conversations around how long it would maintain 9k rpm on straights was a new addition to note calling

SS3-6-9 Desmonds Grave. The stage start for this was almost a motorway. “Flat to the square right” might have been mentioned, once off the main road the bulk of the stage could only be described as a beautiful monster. much like keeping a pet Gorilla. It could fuck you up at any second, but if respected, it was great crack.

The Day was a great progression for Colin. A cautious start led to huge improvements in stage times throughout the day. Unfortunately the second run over Headleys Bridge and Desmonds Grave was cancelled due to incident’s before us. We pushed hard on the final 3 stages and finished well with a 5th in class 9.

Well, it’s that time of the year, West Cork Rally time. Some of us are off to Clonality for the weekend. Some will be acting as ballast in cars, some helping out and others simply getting in the way. Cork Motor Club as usual has put together a fantastic event….

Well, we are all home from Cork Motor Club’s fantastic West Cork Rally. Well, those that headed down are all home. Others, who shall remain nameless didn’t bother to go down (for shame, for shame). Damien and Macca went down to give Owen Murphy a hand and went doing gravel…

      Someone WASTED a chocolate flapjack….

      February 9, 2026February 9, 2026

Ya, “someone who shall remain nameless” (but their name rhymes with tacca) COMPLETELY RUINED a nice chocolate flapjack. We were taking a coffee break at the shed when a box of flapjacks was produced. This individual then greedily grabbed the ONLY chocolate flapjack in the box, took a nibble, declared…

Well the Cork Motor Club forestry rally sprint was a massive success for all 3 of our competing crews on Tuesday. All arrived home with no damage and after a fantastically close battle together. Well done to Damien O Donovan and Vincent Goggin in their 1600 R2 fiesta, on taking possession of the stunning and brand new redmist motorsport trophy, which will hereafter go with the fastest redmist crew on any event more than one of us compete. They were followed only a few seconds back by 2 Subaru gc8s. One was the father and son team of Jason coulter and Ryan Coulter. Jason not having competed in 4 years and Ryan never having competed. Joe shinnors jnr and Patrick O Sullivan next in a constantly self developed Subaru were next after a day of on the limit effort.the rest of us checked things which we knew didn't need checking and all of us ate the sandwiches and tea wherever they were available. Anna Hartnet, Lorraine Coulter and Fiona o brien kept everyone going in spite of mentioning they were cold now and then. Darragh Murphy for his help all day.Well done all. ... See MoreSee Less

Merry Christmas to all of our friends in the world of motorsport. We are back out at Cork Motor Club Boggeragh Rally sprint. Damien is out in Car 43. Come along on the 29th of December to watch us try to work off the turkey....Sneaky edit after someone pointed out I'm an idiot for forgetting Jason Coulter is competing also guided by Ryan. It's Ryan's baptism of fire in the passenger seat. Sorry Mr Coulter... ... See MoreSee Less
